The
Grass Seed Industry
Over 90% of the country's Kentucky Bluegrass
seed is grown in the Inland Northwest, where the
climate is ideal. Kentucky Bluegrass seed has
been grown in this area for over 50 years. In
the mid-60s, many conservation districts encouraged
farmers to plant Kentucky Bluegrass to help reduce
the amount of dust in the air. Since then, the
industry has grown to become the largest employer
in many Eastern Washington communities. For example,
in employs more people than any other industry.
In addition, Kentucky Bluegrass growers contribute
about $125 to $150 million each year to local
communities in Eastern Washington and North Idaho.
In addition to the monetary benefits of the Bluegrass
industry, there are several other values associated
with growing Kentucky Bluegrass. Bluegrass helps
purify the water, protects our aquifer, and prevents
run-off and erosion of our precious topsoil. It
also traps dust and dirt, makes playing fields
safer, releases oxygen, and absorbs carbon dioxide
and other air pollutants. Kentucky Bluegrass preserves
our open spaces and adds economic value to local
properties.
